People enmeshed in an affair often have an illusion of privacy that can easily be seen through. Investigators rely on a number of methods to prove that a spouse is cheating:

Private investigators look for evidence of opportunity and inclination. Opportunity to commit adultery can include entering a hotel room, home, or back seat of a vehicle and emerging some time later. Opportunity on its own, however, is not enough to prove anything. That is why investigators also look for behaviors that show that the parties want to commit adultery. Evidence of inclination can include holding hands, hugging in a romantic way, or kissing. Things like phone calls, emails, and credit card receipts may also be valuable evidence of inclination.
Once information is collected, the client has to decide what to do with the information. If they are seeking a divorce, the investigator’s evidence can be used in court. Or, a person can decide to use the information simply for their own personal benefit (i.e. whether or not to remain in a relationship.)
